THE TEAM:

Michelle Webster is a Minnneapolis-based graphic designer and educator focusing on type design and decorative lettering, releasing two typefaces under the NeueCo brand. The revival family, Barstow was released in 2023. Hobbs was released in September 2025. Webster also teaches Masters-level typography at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design ("MCAD"), as well as decorative typography workshops for MCAD's continuing education division. Recent clients include The State of Minnesota, Anthropologie, Trader Joes, The Bookish Box, and Shapco Printing. Webster holds a Bachelors in Economics (University of San Francisco, a MA in Graphic & Web Design (MCAD), and certificates in Type Design from Type@Cooper (Cooper Union NYC) and UX Design (MCAD).

Darius Wells (1800-1875) was an Victorian-age type designer, businessman and inventor credited as the creator of the wood type industry in America. In the early 19th century, Wells developed an innovative lateral router machine which vastly improved the process for making wood type, and famously open-sourced this technology. The public availability of the lateral router lowered barriers to entry, reduced costs and production time for new type — resulting in the boom of beautiful, elaborate and often extravagant advertising type that has colored the collective design consciousness ever since. Wells is also credited with the design of Gothic Tuscan Italian, a flamboyant trifurcated serif display type which was the inspiration for NeueCo's revival typeface Barstow, released in 2023.
